Even though the Storrier Stearns garden is a perfect backdrop for cultural events, festivals and celebrations, Japanese gardens are designed primarily for quiet contemplation and introspection. Second Sundays offer visitors the serenity that has characterized Japanese gardens for centuries, a respite from a hectic world. Chairs and benches are scattered around the garden and tables are available for picnics and conversation.

Tea Talks and Tasting
September 8, 2pm
Exploring the Classic Teas of Japan
With Tea Specialist Patti Harrison

"Gyokuro Tea, 3 Ways"

Gyokuro tea is a rare Japanese tea that is grown in the shade under straw mats for about 20 days prior to harvest. This stresses the plant, and as it struggles to draw energy from the sun, the chemistry of the leaves change. The result is higher levels of L-Theanine, responsible for increased mental clarity and focus, and a clear resonating note of the most unique of all flavors: umami.
The gyokuro tasting session will include a first infusion as cold brew, the second infusion with hot water, and the third by adding the remaining leaves to a bowl of rice with soy sauce and sesame seeds.
  • Tea ceremonies with Mikko in the teahouse will resume in October
